Information Displayed for Each Image

Q. What information is displayed for each image?

A. The initial information displayed with each thumbnail, is the reference number, description (caption), and the keywords associated with the image. All of these fields are used when you perform a 'search'. When you click on an image, a pop up window appears with a larger version of the image and the year the photograph taken, the aspect ratio (width:height) and the size of the image in pixels (width x height).

Size of Images

Q - What size are the images for sale?

A - The size, quoted in pixels, is provided for each image on the pop up window which appears when you click on an image.

Q. What is the size of the images on dispay on this web site?

A. The thumbnails are 70 pixels height and the preview images which you see when you click on a thumbnail image are 140 pixels height.

Printing Size

Q. What size can the images be printed?

A. This depends on the resolution of the image and the print resolution. Here is a rough guide on the sizes of prints, with optimum quality, that can be made for every 1,000 pixels at different print resolutions (Print resolution quoted as DPI - Dots Per Inch):-

1,000 pixels = 8.5 cm (3.3 inches) at 300 dpi
1,000 pixels = 12.7 cm (5 inches) at 200 dpi
1,000 pixels = 16.9 cm (6.6 inches) at 150dpi

Most magazines and other quality printing use a print resolution of 300dpi and newspapers use 150dpi.

Date of Photographs

Q. Why do you provide the year the photograph was taken?

A. When you click on an image, in addition to getting a larger preview image, you get the year the picture was taken. This is to ensure that you are aware of the age of a photograph. In most cases, when it is a landscape or seascape this will have little impact. However, there may be situations when you wish to illustrate a particular locality, and the date the photograph was taken may have significance.

Licensing

Q. Are the images on this web site being offered as 'Royalty Free' (RF)

A. Yes. This is the industry standard expression. For simplicity and clarity, the photographs have a fixed price depending on their aspect ratio, and the price does not vary according to usage. However, the images are not offered on an exclusive basis and other organisations may purchase the same image as you, although with the large volume of images on offer, it is unlikely that a direct competitor will purchase the same image. If you see a particular image which you would like to license on an exclusive basis, please send an email or use the 'Contact Us' page. We will advise you if it has been sold previously, and if not we can negotiate a fee for exclusive use of an image. This will usually be for a period of 1 year and the fee will be a minimum of 3 times the cost of the RF fee. If agreed, the image will be withdrawn from this web site for the agreed period.
